 A May Blackboard Calendar- The Sagebrush

THE sagebrush is the floral emblem of the state of Nevada. The plant is very common in the large semidesert areas, found in the West and the Middle West. For mile upon mile in some of these sections, the sagebrush is the only growing thing to be seen. The plant belongs to the Artemisia family. In coloring the sagebrush, make the flowers a grayish-brown and the leaves a soft gray-green. Color the stalk a red- brown, using purple for all the shadow parts. In order to give the design a less somber appearance, it will be well to outline the contour of the plant in some light color, as for example yellow, or light-orange. If desired, the calendar panel can be made entirely white, and the lines and lettering drawn in with purple chalk.

Catbird - Blackboard Reading Lesson

In May the catbirds comemorth,
The catbird is gray.

The tail and top of the head are black.

The call sounds like a cat's miaow. The song is very sweet.

The catbird sings a whisper song.

The nest is rough and is very untidy on the outside.

The inside is softly lined.

 The nest holds from four to six eggs. The baby birds eat worms, bugs, and other insects.

WILD ROSE IS THE STATE FLOWER OF IOWA, NORTH DAKOTA, GEORGIA AND NEW YORK 

By JOHN THE wild rose makes an attractive calendar. In planning the calendar, first block in the location of the various blossoms. This is done, connect them with a light line, indicating the stems. Finally add the leaf shapes. 
It is best to do this lightly, so that any needed corrections may be easily made. Next proceed, to color the flowers.

Make the petals a light pink in the highlights, and a deep rose pink in the darker parts. The stamens are deep yellow, the leaves are medium green, and the stems a brownish green. The outlining border panel may be done in a light yellow-green.

BOTH, Louisiana and Mississippi have chosen the magnolia as a floral emblem. The flower is artistic in contour, and possesses a delightful fragrance. There are a number of varieties of magnolias, but the most beautiful is that known as the magnolia "grandiflora," which often grows seventy-five feet high. 

To sketch this panel, first block in all the larger areas, as the calendar and the flower forms. If light outlines of large ellipses are drawn and the flowers sketched within, the drawing will be found quite easy.

The petals should be colored a creamy white, and touches of gray green added in the shadows. The pistil of the flower is colored an orange brown, with the circular forms outlined in light brown. The stamens are a deep yellow. Color the leaves a deep green, with light brown on the undersides. Color the twig brown.

The outside border may be done in red-orange, emerald green, or orange-yellow.   

The Coloring page is used as the classrom decoration for the Blackboard, as the coloring page for Nature Studies, Seat work lesson, Art, Drawing. Geography, Civic Education.

The little girl's face and arms should be flesh-color,her eyes blue, and hair yellow, or light-brown. Her dress may be yellow, pink, or blue, the roses red, with yellow centers, and green leaves and stems. The cap may be the same color as the dress, with the plain part of the cap, the apron and cuffs white. The tulips may be red, orange, or yellow, depending on the color of the girl's dress. The flower pot may be green or brown.

 JOLLY JINGLES FROM HEALTHLAND  was published in 1931.

The famous poster of the American designer artist- the school project- Seat Work Suggestion for Easter in the classes of the Hygiene. The poster is DESIGNED BY FRANCES CLAUSEN in 1931. The poster was designed as the school project for  the month of MARCH- calendar of 1931. In the picture- The doll Peggy and the cup for the Easter egg. Peggy the traditional name of the doll, cardboard project for the decoration of Easter table.

The Poem is added to be studied and learned while making this project at school.

These jingles and toys are intended first grade children, using the play ideao to put over necessary health lessons. Many pupils come to school without adequate breakfasts, and these are always children from poor homes.

First, the teacher should  teach the rhyme, which may also be used for supplementary reading material. The child's own name may be used instead of Peggy.

How and when the toy Peggy is made?- directions for the teacher

Show the toy, and promise it as a reward for a certain number of good breakfasts eaten. When about half the class have the number required to their credit, the whole class may make the toy. Those ,ready to receive one, may take theirs home; the others are taking theirs, as they complete their records. .

 Peggy's hair may be yellow and her eyes blue. The dress which forms the egg. when the head is turned upside down. should be white/ The egg cup may be pink, or blue- according to the wishes of the individual child. A stand may be pasted on the back, if desired;- then the toy may be placed on the breakfast table, and Peggy will help the children to eat their breakfasts.
