What is the actual distinction between the hawks and the falcons?  Both species belong to the family Falconidae of the order Accipitres, but they are assigned to different genera -Astur and Falce . If you  once see a hawk and a falcon side by side alive, and on the wing- you will easily appreciate one great dissimilarity.  Hawks have short wings and long tails, while the falcons have short tails and wings of medium length. 

To the ornithologist however there is one anatomical difference that at once identifies the falcon viz the very distinct tooth or notch on the upper half or mandible of his bill. The hawks do not have this tooth and the upper half of their bills shows a curve.

Coloring pages for the month of May- Theme Japan. Japanese Church building is called Pagoda. In Primary Grades poster may be used as the base for the freehand paper cutting project.

The various parts of this poster may be cut out from colored paper, according to color scheme, suggested in the directions, or they may be drawn and from white paper and colored as follows.

 The pagoda may be brown with  gray shadows. The background may be light yellow, or sky blue.

Mother And Baby- Coloring Page For Mother's Day- Freehand Paper Cutting Project

 These designs may be made on the hectograph and colored with crayons or colors, and cut out, and pasted on or stiff paper.
 In the first card the features of mother and baby should be flesh; with the mother's hair dark-brown; the baby's hair- yellow. The baby's dress may be pale blue with the lace. The mother's dress may be tan and collar white.

Peasant Costume of Sweden

WHATEVER else your peasant costume plates are doing for you, they are using up lots of gay paints and crayons, reds and yellows, and greens, and blues, just as bright as you can get them. Climate seems to make little difference in the brilliance of national taste. for these Swedish costumes are just gay. 

The girl in the plate is wearing a dress from Floda, Sweden. Her black skirt is embroidered in colors, and edged with scarlet. Her dark blue apron has at the side a gayly embroidered bag, and is topped by a bright girdle. Little of the red and white striped bodice shows under the scarlet embroidered shawl. All this brilliance is relieved by a white blouse and stockings, and a scarlet cap decorated with needlework tops it all.

The dress below the figure has a blue skirt with a green hem. The apron you can make very attractive by coloring the wide plain stripe scarlet, the closely barred stripe green, and the loosely barred one in blue, leaving a white stripe in between .The bag and belt are scarlet, with narrow green bodice and straps, and red and green collar. The jaunty cap made of black velvet with red seam, scarlet ends and tassels, should be perched on the back of the head.  

The lad is a bit more sober in his array, but his love of color bursts forth in gay spots. He is wearing the garb worn in Dalecarlia. The plain black vest and white shirt is set off with yellow trousers and bright garters. The suit below on the left has a dark coat with gay embroidery at the wrists, bright tie, white or light colored stockings.

The suit at the right is from Halsingland. The dark gray-blue coat and trousers have bindings of red, and the garters are gay. The red vest is bound with green, and the stockings are dark. With this costume goes a bright scarlet сар.

Color Carbon or hectographed copies of this outline may be given to children to trace, color, and mount. Let one of the wise men wear dull-green, one dull-blue, and one dull-orange,- with hats to match. The bowl may be cream, with orange bands. Paint the sky and water light-blue, leaving the waves white. Outline heavily after painting.

 Jointed "Ducky Daddles" Toy

Jointed Ducky Daddles Toy  is a classic wooden American toy. Younger pupils may cut the parts of this toy from heavy construction paper; older pupils, who can use a jigsaw. may cut them from thin pieces of the wooden or finery board. 

Color  the eye, the bill and feet  of the ducky in orange/ Mount, as shown, using small round-headed brass paper fasteners, or bits of knotted thread at the joints of the paper toy, and round-headed screws with the parts (not too tightly screwed together) for the wooden toy.

It is suggested that the calendar day of the month be taken out of the magazine and mounted on a larger sheet of colored paper. A margin of two inches should be allowed on the top, and the two sides of the drawing; but the bottom margin should be four inches. This will allow a calendar leaf of the whole month to be pasted below the picture. Color mount for the May picture is light blue.

THE sagebrush is the floral emblem of the state of Nevada. The plant is very common in the large semidesert areas, found in the West and the Middle West. For mile upon mile in some of these sections, the sagebrush is the only growing thing to be seen. The plant belongs to the Artemisia family. In coloring the sagebrush, make the flowers a grayish-brown and the leaves a soft gray-green. Color the stalk a red- brown, using purple for all the shadow parts. In order to give the design a less somber appearance, it will be well to outline the contour of the plant in some light color, as for example yellow, or light-orange. If desired, the calendar panel can be made entirely white, and the lines and lettering drawn in with purple chalk.

 The nest holds from four to six eggs. The baby birds eat worms, bugs, and other insects.

Tulip Tree- Indiana

THE TULIP TREE 

IS THE STATE FLOWER OF INDIANA

January, April coloring page-  INDIANA

IT IS interesting to note that Indiana is chosen floral emblem After adopting the pink carnation as its emblem and accepting it as such for several years; Indiana  state decided that the tulip tree would be a more fitting representative. The tulip tree is a splendid large tree which often attains a height of one hundred and fifty feet. It is found growing in woodland sections and its flowers come out in  May or June. The flowers are a rich creamy color, with deep red brown streaks at the bottom of each petal/

1.Using the illustrated duck pattern,- see that each child has two. Color yellow and paste two ducks together, with the exception of the wing, which is to be folded over. Fold the small pasting flap back. and paste onto the blue pond. The duck will then stand up and seem to be swimming in the water.

2.s Illustrate Stevenson's poem:

 The rain is raining all around 

It rains on field and tree; 

It falls on the umbrellas here, 

And on the ships at sea.

 Do this in any medium.
