MAY PAPER CUTTING BORDER - MEMORIAL DAY ORNAMENTS

CUT two strips 4 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches long from silhouette or dark paper. Fold into thirds, obtaining proportions, shown the diagram. Keep all edges as even, as possible. Dotted lines show folded edges. 
To start cutting, first clip a little diamond shaped hole at a given point, by making a short fold and cutting. Insert scissors at this point. 

Keep a firm hold on the paper, and turn it to meet the scissors. This will insure good results. Cut squarely up to intersections to avoid tearing. 

In the classroom, a large drawing made on the blackboard and several borders cut out by the teacher in front of the class will help make the work easy. 

Allow pupils to make two borders, selecting the best for display. Pupils should be encouraged to keep to the simple, well massed forms for cutting work.

DECORATION DAY POSTER- COLORING PAGE

 Decoration Day Poster 

It is suggested that the calendar day of the month be taken out of the magazine and mounted on a larger sheet of colored paper. A margin of two inches should be allowed on the top, and the two sides of the drawing; but the bottom margin should be four inches. This will allow a calendar leaf of the whole month to be pasted below the picture. Color mount for the May picture is light blue.

DECORATION DAY

DECORATION DAY, or MEMORIAL DAY , one day in the spring of each year, set apart as a legal holiday in most of the states of the American Union, to do honor to those who fought on either side in the War of Secession. Out of an expression of love and grief by bereaved women of the South- the strewing of wild flowers on the graves of their soldier dead one certain day each year- has grown a nation wide and beautiful custom. Since 1899 the celebration of the day has been extended to include the honored dead of the Spanish American War.

 General John A. Logan, commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, in 1868 designated the thirtieth day of May as the day on which the graves of dead Union soldiers should be decorated, and this date is now universally observed throughout the Northern states. April 26 is appointed as Memorial Day in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi; in North and South Carolina the day set apart is May 10; the second Friday in May is ob sered in Tennessee and in Louisiana. Jefferson Davis's birthday, June 3, is also that state's Memorial Day. Decoration Day is now a day of dignified addresses, exercises, parades, and military salutes, as well as strewing of flowers, and planting of shrubs.

We deck with flags and strew with flowers 
The sod where sleep those men of ours- 
The heroes of the nation, who 

Gave, when its need of men they knew, 

Themselves, as brave men dare to do. 

From staff and spire hang banners 

low;

We follow drumbeats hushed and slow.

The very birds, it seems to me, 

Sing with a softer melody. 

The breezes, laden with perfume, 

From garden growth and wayside

 bloom, 

Bestir the young leaves tenderly,

 And drift beneath the apple tree 

Its fallen blossoms, like a mass 

Of tinted snow, upon the grass, 

The sunbeams on the greensward play.

Her finest and her fairest May 

Giveth for Decoration Day.
