A Chinese Puzzle
By Huo Mi Ling
THIS game is the Diagram of "Adding Knowledge." But it is more commonly known by the name "The Fifteen Puzzle," as a supplement to another similar Chinese game, called "The Seven Puzzle."
The so-called "Fifteen Puzzle," is a book, consisting of one hundred and twelve diagrams, or rough pictures. All these diagrams can be constructed with fifteen given pieces of cardboard.
To begin the game, have a piece of cardboard, and cut the following fifteen pieces out of it. Be very careful and accurate in cutting.
Now put these fifteen pieces on a table, and try to construct the following figures, selected from the book. Be sure that you have used all the fifteen pieces- no more and no less,- before you say that you have gotten a figure And when you think you have it be sure that what you construct is exactly he same as the given figure. Of course, the figures may be larger than the models, but they must be proportionately larger.
You may get a figure very quickly, but you may not in three days. Don't say that the figure is wrong, or the writer is fooling you, when you cannot get it. If one brain is not enough, have several working together. Don't give up and say "I cannot get it," for you are greater than the game- the easy little game!"
